South Dakota's Badlands are remarkable. It's hot and there is no shade and little vegetation to speak of, but there is such beauty in the starkness.
The best time of day for photos is not midday (as pictured), but rather when the shadows offer great patterns. Morning would be better than evening in the summer because it would be cooler.
